Making sliced potatoes in the air fryer is a smart and delicious way to use russet potatoes. These air-fried potato slices cook quickly and make a great side dish or snack when paired with your favorite dipping sauce.

I had a couple large bags of russet potatoes on hand and didn’t want to wait for huge baked potatoes, so I sliced them into rounds about 1/4 inch thick and air fried them. They aren’t as thin and crunchy as chips, but they develop a lovely golden exterior and stay tender inside — perfect for dipping.
Ingredients
- Russet potatoes
- Olive oil
- Smoked paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Salt
How to make sliced potatoes in the air fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (about 200°C) for 5 minutes. Scrub the potatoes well and pat them dry. Slice each potato into 1/4-inch (6 mm) rounds and place the slices in a large bowl. Add the olive oil and the seasonings, then toss until every slice is evenly coated.

Arrange the potato slices in the air fryer basket. It’s fine if they overlap a bit since you’ll shake or toss them several times during cooking to ensure even browning.

Air fry at 400°F for 20–25 minutes, tossing every 5 minutes. Cooking times vary by air fryer model and potato thickness, so check for a golden color and tender centers. For a crispier finish, increase the time slightly, watching closely so they don’t burn.

Serve immediately with your preferred toppings or dipping sauce. These slices pair well with mayonnaise-based sauces, ketchup, sour cream, or a spicy dip.

Customization ideas
These potato slices are very versatile. Add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes for heat, or toss with dried herbs like parsley, thyme, or oregano for a herby flavor. To make loaded slices, sprinkle on shredded cheese and cooked bacon, then return to the air fryer a couple of minutes to melt the cheese. Finish with a dollop of sour cream or chives.
Dipping sauces
- Harissa mayo
- Honey mustard BBQ sauce
- Calabrian mayo
- Peri-peri mayo
- Chipotle mayo
How to store and reheat leftovers
Store leftover potato slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. To reheat, place them back in the air fryer for a few minutes at 375–400°F until warmed and crisped to your liking.
