Once you try “boiling” eggs in an air fryer you’ll use the method for meal prep, snacks, deviled eggs, egg salad, and more. There’s minimal cleanup because nothing actually boils — simply place cold eggs in the basket, cook, plunge them into ice water, and peel.

We test this in our own kitchen regularly, so the guidance here is practical and vetted. The eggs pair perfectly with quick breakfasts and low-carb dishes.

What you Need

You only need two things:

  • Air fryer – We tested this in a 4‑quart Ninja, a 5.8‑quart Cosori, and compact Dash models. The method works in most air fryers, but always check your manual and follow any model-specific safety recommendations.
  • Eggs – Use cold eggs straight from the refrigerator. Large and extra-large chicken eggs both work; adjust timing slightly if using very small or unusually large eggs.

  1. Arrange cold eggs in the air fryer basket. A trivet or rack helps keep them steady but isn’t required—just avoid crowding the bottom so air can circulate.
  2. Set the air fryer to 250 °F. Cook time depends on desired doneness (details below). We typically use 16 minutes for a firm yolk, adding a minute for extra-large eggs.
    • Note: Preheating is optional. If you preheat for a minute or two, reduce the cook time by a minute or so.
  3. When the timer ends, use tongs to transfer eggs directly into a bowl of ice water. The ice bath immediately stops cooking. Let eggs sit at least 5 minutes until cool to the touch—this makes peeling much easier.
  4. Peel and enjoy immediately, or store eggs peeled or unpeeled in the refrigerator (see storage section).

Air fryers vary, so use these times as a starting point and adjust to suit your machine and taste:

  • Soft-boiled: 11–12 minutes at 250°F
  • Medium-boiled: 13–14 minutes at 250°F
  • Hard-boiled: 15–17 minutes at 250°F

How to Peel

Peeling air-fried eggs is easy when you follow a few simple rules:

  • Age matters: Very fresh eggs are harder to peel because the membrane clings tighter to the shell. If possible, use eggs that have been in your fridge a few days.
  • Cool completely: Chilling in an ice bath for at least 5 minutes firms the interior and helps the egg separate from the shell.
  • Start at the ends: Gently tap the egg on both ends to create small cracks, then roll it to loosen the shell. The shell often peels off cleanly in large pieces.

Storage

To limit bacterial growth, refrigerate eggs within 2 hours of cooking.

Refrigerator: Store unpeeled eggs in an airtight container up to 1 week. Peeled eggs keep up to 5 days.

Freezer: Only egg yolks freeze well; whites become rubbery. Freeze yolks up to 2 months in an airtight container.
