WHAT IS AN AIR FRYER?
An air fryer is a compact countertop appliance that cooks by circulating hot air quickly around food, similar to a small convection oven. It crisps foods with minimal oil, making it ideal for light, crunchy snacks like kale chips.
ARE KALE CHIPS HEALTHY
Kale is nutrient-dense and provides protein, fibre and vitamins like A, B, C and K. Turning kale into chips retains many of those benefits when you use simple, wholesome ingredients.
Homemade kale chips are a healthier alternative to many packaged snacks. By making them yourself you control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary additives and extra sugars often found in store-bought options.
INGREDIENTS

Just a few everyday ingredients are needed. Full measurements appear in the recipe card below.
- Kale
- Olive oil
- Maple syrup
- Salt
HOW TO MAKE SWEET & SALTY KALE CHIPS
Thoroughly wash and dry the kale — a salad spinner helps. Remove the large stems and tear the leaves into chip-sized pieces.

Place the leaves in a bowl with the olive oil and massage until each piece is lightly coated. Add the maple syrup and toss to coat, then season with a pinch of salt.

Preheat the air fryer. Transfer the kale to the basket in a single layer if possible. Cook at 180°C / 350°F for 2–3 minutes, shaking the basket every minute to promote even crisping. The chips are done when they are dry, crispy and slightly golden. Keep a close eye on them — they can burn quickly.

Remove the chips from the air fryer and enjoy immediately for the best texture.
HOW DO YOU KEEP KALE CHIPS CRISPY?
Kale chips are at their crispiest right after cooking, so it’s best to make small batches as needed. If you do prepare them ahead, store completely cooled chips in an airtight container at room temperature to preserve as much crispness as possible.

TOP TIPS
- Remove large stems before cooking — save stems for stocks or broths.
- Tear leaves to your preferred chip size: smaller pieces crisp faster, larger pieces give a more substantial bite.
- Watch the chips while cooking and shake the basket regularly to prevent burning.
- For maximum crispiness, eat the chips immediately.
- This recipe is designed as a small batch (serves 1–2). Feel free to double or triple the ingredients to serve more people, but cook in batches so each is crisp.
