Gather one or two large plastic storage bins. Depending on how full your garland is, one bin will often suffice. If your garland is very full or you have multiple pieces, use two bins to avoid crushing the foliage and decorations.

Begin by removing any bows, silk poinsettias, or loose embellishments and place them aside. I usually start at the top of the garland and remove the Velcro garland ties I use to secure it to the railing. These ties are reusable and make re-hanging much faster. When I remove each tie, I reattach it to itself and leave it in the exact spot on the garland where it had been placed.

Keep the lights attached to the garland and coil the extension cord with the garland so everything stays together. This prevents last-minute searches for cords or ties the following year.

To fit the garland neatly into the bin, layer it in a circular motion, forming loose coils to avoid crushing the branches and lights. Once the garland is arranged, place the bows and other flat decorations on top before closing the lid.
